　　The term from Cranny-Francis in addition to the word“space”that is unique to her discussion is mine-en-scene.This key term is mentioned several times in her reading.Cranny-Francis define this key term as follows:“the configuration of elements that generate meaning,or put it another way,the meaning that generates a particular configurations of elements(Cranny-Francis 122).The definition is different from maybe common understandings of the word.According to the definition provided by Merriam-Webster,it refers to“the arrangement of actors and scenery on a stage for a theatrical production and the physical setting of an action”(“Definition of Mise-en-scène”,2018).Thus,the configuration of elements is different from the most commonly used meaning with it.

　　This term is also effective in analyzing the photos,which included the picture“Be Yourself,Follow Your Heart”and“The symbol of vitality”.If Cranny-Francis applies this term to the photos I am discussing,she will recognize the main elements of the picture and then examine the relationship between those elements.In the picture“Be Yourself,Follow Your Heart”,there is the text“BE HAPPY”on the front of the swing board,which are the words in the configuration.In addition,there are different visual symbols appearing in the photo,which included a swing board,two black lines,a string of words painted in the white color and the ground below the string as well.As for sound,there was the sound of the wind and basically the place was quite.The configuration of elements that generate meaning for the viewers and the photo takers as well.And she think of the photos as a symbol of the tree of the school and a sense of belonging for someone.As for the photo entitled“The symbol of vitality”,Cranny-Francis may apply this term to the photos by recognize the main elements of the picture which are a wall,two small windows,some trees outside the windows,and sunlight shining and then examine the meaning projected by the combination of those elements.She may interpret a rather positive meaning of the photo as the sunlight and trees often stands for hope which can bring joy to people,and bring positive thoughts.

　　?However,there are also some limits that I run into trying to analyze these photos using only Cranny-Francis’s ideas of mine-en-scene.Although the elements are often stable and fixed for different people,the meaning generated from the configuration of elements may be quite different for different people.It is because the meaning of those elements may differ to persons in different situations and life experience.Therefore,it is rather difficult to arrive at a rather objective and unified view of meaning when I analyze the photos with the term of mine-en-scene.
